I couldn’t fall back asleep after Danny went, so I slipped into his shirt and went into the kitchen to fix myself a cup of coffee. It was already past 3 a.m. and soon it would be dawn. I didn’t think I was going to get any sleep again.

Besides, I kept worrying about the child he hurried out to go treat.

I hope it’s nothing serious. I sat in his kitchen for a while with the mug of black coffee in my hands, but I didn’t drink much of it before leaving it on the table and walking to the living room.

His light blue couch was decorated with colorful pillows, and a huge TV stand was mounted into the wall even though there was no TV there.

He barely has the time to watch it anyway.

The fireplace beneath it had a mantel, and the rest of the walls were covered in a floral-patterned wallpaper. I noticed an urn on the mantel and walked over to it, sat on the ground, and stared at it for a long time.

“John Harper, a loving husband and father.”

I realized it was his father’s ashes in the urn. I wondered what he was like and what had happened to him. Danny had only one picture frame hung up on his wall, and he resembled the woman in it so much, so I could tell it was his mom.

It was a picture of him in a graduation gown hugging her, and the grin on his lips was wide enough to cover his entire face.

A click at the door drew my attention, and I spun around to see the door open. I rushed to my feet when Danny entered the house.

“How’s the kid?” I asked when I got to him.

“He’s better now,” he replied, then dropped the box he held on to the ground and groaned. Danny walked around a couch flopped down on it and flung his head back to rest on it.

“But they’ll have to go to the hospital once dawn breaks,” he replied in a grim tone. I could tell from the saddened look on his face that the kid needed more medical attention than the treatment Danny had given him.

Danny massaged his temples before he scooted closer to me on the couch and made me lean towards him. My head rested his shoulder, and we sat there for a long time before he spoke again. “I hate it when kids have to suffer,” he said. “It’s not something I would wish on any parent.”

“I know,” I replied. As a mother, too, I could imagine what this kid’s mother felt each time she looked at her son. The pain would eat at her, and she would be miserable because she couldn’t do anything to help her son.

Once again, I was thankful for Noah, and I closed my eyes for a bit.

Danny caressed me with both hands before he pressed a kiss to my temples.

“I’ll have to go to the hospital today to make sure my neighbor’s kid is alright, and he gets the treatment he needs.
